Destin is a small, coastal town on the Florida panhandle known for its white, sandy beaches and emerald-colored water. While the city receives thousands of tourists every year, it only has a total population of 13,931, 18.7% of whom are seniors. In addition to water activities, Destin has numerous golf courses and public parks, which in combination with the city's warm, year round climate, ensures seniors have plentiful opportunities to stay active outdoors. In the event of a medical emergency, seniors can visit Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast or one of the city's other hospitals.
Although Destin's overall cost of living is relatively high, many of the health-related services in the city have costs near the national averages. For assisted living, the city's seniors can choose from around 19 facilities where the average cost of care is $4,375 a month, just $75 higher than the national median.
The SeniorScore for Destin, FL
A city's SeniorScore is determined by calculating how well-oriented certain aspects of a city are to the well-being of seniors. Destin has an overall score of 77, higher than both the state and national averages. It received its highest score, 80, in the Finances category and its lowest score, 55, in Health & Safety. For Recreation & Leisure and General Quality of Life, Destin's SeniorScores are 64 and 74, respectively.
With savings and money management being so critical during retirement, Destin's high marks for the Finances category will earn it additional interest from seniors keeping a close eye on their nest eggs. In addition to the state's lack of income tax, average property taxes in the city as a percentage of income and property value are both well below the national figures. Additionally, Destin has higher household incomes and a lower unemployment rate than the majority of the nation. For General Quality of Life, the city received a SeniorScore of 74, its second highest score. Near perfect average temperatures, safe schools and good air quality help the city in this category, but its high annual rainfall levels hold it back.
The main reasons Destin's worst SeniorScore is in Health & Safety are because for its size, the city doesn't have very many fire stations and a low amount of home health care agencies. However it does have three hospitals close by and out of the city's physicians, a high percentage are registered with Medicare.
