By combining more than 100 data points from government and private databases into four senior-relevant categories, SeniorScore indicates how senior-friendly a location is. With an overall score of 79, Hoover scores seven points higher than both the national and state averages of 72. Of the four categories, Hoover scored highest in the Finances category, with a 75, and the Recreation & Leisure category, with a 70. Since Hoover is a suburb of Birmingham, the SeniorScore for Birmingham can be used when considering Hoover as a retirement destination.
Seniors can rest easy knowing that retiring in Hoover is a safe bet for their financial profile. While the cost of living is considered very low compared with national standards, seniors also earn more, which is reflected in the city’s higher-than-average mean household, median household and per capita incomes. In addition, assisted living costs are significantly lower here than elsewhere in the country. Coupled with the lower property taxes and an absence of either Social Security or pension taxes, it’s no wonder that Hoover earned a score of 75 in the Finances category. In the Recreation category, Hoover also scored well, thanks in large part to the many nearby amenities, including 37 golf courses, 23 parks and an abundance of shopping malls, gyms and movie theaters.
Access to the very high number of Medicare-registered physicians, as well as the 15 nearby hospitals (including the highly-ranked University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital) earned Hoover a score of 66 in the Health & Safety category. And in the General Quality of Life category, the very mild winters, as well as the above-average water quality, helped Hoover earn the same score of 66.
