There are two main types of home-based care. Home care includes personal care services, meal planning and preparation, transportation and companionship. Home health care features these services, as well as some skilled nursing services. According to the Genworth 2020 Cost of Care Survey, seniors in New Haven pay $4,767 per month for home care and $4,948 for home health care. This is high compared to the state averages of $4,576 and $4,767 per month, respectively. New Haven is also pricey compared to the national average care costs of $4,481 for home care and $4,576 for home health care.
New Haven’s home care fees are consistent with other major regions in the state. In the Bridgeport area, which includes Bridgeport, Stamford and Norwalk, and in the Norwich area, which encompasses Norwich and New London, seniors pay $4,767 per month for home care. Hartford is the cheapest major city in the state for this type of care at $4,528 monthly. New Haven is the second-most expensive option for home health care, surpassed only by the Bridgeport area at $5,148 monthly. In Hartford and Norwich, seniors pay approximately $4,767 per month for this level of care.

Through the local AAA, seniors can access a broad range of services, including those that promote safety and comfort for seniors who live at home. The agency’s staff works with older adults and families to provide services, such as home modifications and repairs, financial counseling, transportation and home-delivered and congregate meals. The agency also has an Aging and Disability Resource Center that guides older adults in accessing Medicare and Medicaid benefits, in-home assistance, social services and benefits programs and nutrition services.

The city supports adults aged 55 and over who live in their own homes through the Department of Elderly Services. It provides case management and referral services to help residents connect with the services they need, including legal, housing, financial, medical and nutritional support. It also fosters an engaged, social environment for older residents through four events throughout the year, including the Senior Volunteer of the Year Luncheon, Connecticut Senior Day, Connecticut Day at the Big E and an annual chaperoned trip to Bishop Orchards for apple-picking and shopping.

Lifebridge Community Services is a nonprofit agency that offers a variety of supportive programs for residents of the Greater New Haven area, including a meal delivery program for those aged 60 and over. Meals are available to homebound individuals and are well-balanced and nutritious, with renal, chopped and pureed options available. The organization also operates 16 Senior Community Cafes throughout the region, which serve hot meals on weekdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and a Senior Dine Dining program at The Greek Olive, which has a fixed menu of eight entrees in exchange for a small donation.

HomeFront provides free home repairs for qualifying seniors in New Haven. This community-based nonprofit organization is operated primarily by volunteers. While exact services available depend on funding and the skills and size of the volunteer teams, seniors may be able to get help with fixing leaks in their home’s roofs, repairing water-damaged walls and floors and installing insulation and new windows. The organization can also provide services to enhance the home’s safety, including installing wheelchair ramps, fixing walkways and repairing steps and upgrading the home’s electrical system.
