Omaha, the largest city in Nebraska, has a variety of cultural art exhibits to take in at local museums and is a popular spot for retired seniors who have a taste for historical attractions. Of Omaha's 478,192 residents, 12.8% are adults aged 65 and older.
Omaha's SeniorScore is 78, which is higher than the national average of 72 and the Nebraska state average of 74. SeniorScore uses 100 data points from government and private databases and breaks that information down into four categories to determine the overall quality of life for seniors living in a specific city. Omaha's highest-scoring category was Health & Safety with a 74 due to a very high number of home health care providers and Medicare-registered physicians, as well as 16 hospitals, serving the area. With 55 golf courses, 57 parks, 17 movie theaters and 126 gyms or health clubs in and around the city, Omaha earned a 71 in Recreation & Leisure. Omaha's lowest score of 63 in General Quality of Life is largely due to its very harsh mean temperatures, below average air quality and very poor water quality.
A very low overall cost of living compared to the rest of the country makes Omaha an appealing retirement spot for seniors. Several state programs, such as Senior Care Options, Meals on Wheels and the Homemaker Program, provide support for Omaha senior residents. From these programs, seniors can gain access to several helpful services, including counseling about long-term care options and insurance, hot meals delivered daily, housekeeping services and referrals to relevant medical care.
This guide covers the cost of home care in Omaha and local resources that can help seniors maintain their independence and quality of life at home as long as possible.

Seniors in Omaha have access to many programs and services that help older adults maintain their independence and safely age in place. Below, we've compiled a few of the most helpful resources:
The Senior Care Options (SCO) program ensures elderly Medicaid applicants in eastern Nebraska are receiving the right level of care by providing the resources they need to make an informed decision. Seniors are referred to SCO when they apply for Medicaid to help pay for long-term care, at which point an SCO counselor assesses the individual's living situation, including how much assistance with activities for daily living they need, whether there are safety concerns and if the senior needs professional nursing services. Based on these evaluations, counselors can advise seniors on their care options and can make recommendations for in-home, recuperative or nursing home care.
