Nestled on the Gulf of Mexico in southwestern Florida, the city of Sarasota is the U.S. News & World Report’s second-best city for retirees. More than one in four of its 58,285 residents are aged 65 and older, and people aged 80 and older will make up the fastest-growing demographic in the area over the next three decades.
Sarasota’s SeniorScore of 81 exceeds the national average of 72. This score was compiled by assessing the city’s senior friendliness in four categories: General Quality of Life, Recreation & Leisure, Health & Safety and Finances. Thanks to its miles of beaches and abundance of nature parks, shopping venues and cultural amenities, Sarasota received its highest points in Recreation and Leisure. The city earned a high General Quality of Life score due to its year-round sunny climate and a well-educated population. Sarasota seniors can enjoy zero state income taxes, low property tax rates and a lower than average state sales tax.
Brimming with small-town charm and big-city attractions, Sarasota boasts an ideal location with plentiful recreational opportunities for seniors to experience. The city also offers an array of local resources intended to help mature residents maintain their independence, health, safety and dignity while living at home. Sarasota was the first Florida community to be recognized by the World Health Organization and the AARP as an Age-Friendly City, acknowledging the community’s efforts to promote healthy, active aging.
In this guide, we cover the cost of home care in Sarasota. We also list some local resources that can help older residents live well in their own homes for as long as possible.
The Cost of Home Care in Sarasota, FL
The Genworth 2019 Cost of Care Survey reports that home care in Sarasota costs a monthly average of about $572 above Florida’s state average ($4,004) and close to around $286 higher than the national average ($4,290). Within the state, costs vary significantly. For instance, seniors in the Tampa area to the north pay about $459 less per month for home care than those in Sarasota. Southern neighboring cities Punta Gorda and the Cape Coral area see a cost difference between $200-$300 below Sarasota, as does Sebring ($4,481) to the east. However, the monthly home care cost in Naples ($4,767), the southernmost of the cities listed, is almost $200 more expensive than that of Sarasota.
Home health care costs in Sarasota, as well the averages for Florida and the U.S. are a bit higher than home care costs. This makes since home health care provides medical services, including medication administration, wound care, and monitoring vital signs, which is beyond the personal need care that home care services provide, such as dressing, bathing, and toileting, and companionship. This trend continues in some southern Florida cities, but in others, like Punta Gorda, Naples and Sebring, the cost of both types of care is the same per month.
