The Senior Companion Program seeks to provide help and friendship for seniors who live alone at home. Trained Senior Companion Volunteers provide assistance with daily living tasks, grocery shopping, home cleaning, laundry and other services that help seniors in Ottawa County to remain in their homes instead of entering expensive long-term care communities.
Volunteers are 55 years and older and receive tax-free stipends and reimbursements for transportation and other expenses. The Senior Companion Program is free for seniors 60 and older who need help while living at home.

The Shawnee Recreation Center offers programs and activities for seniors 55 and older and offers multi-purpose rooms available to rent for special occasions. Classes include dancing, music, crafts and fitness and activities include billiards, pickleball, bingo and card games.
Meals are offered by Project Heart at the Community Center, and a calendar can be found on the center's Facebook page. The center is located in the Shawnee city building at 401 N. Bell.

Shawnee residents 65 and older or adults with disabilities can call for a ride with the Shawnee CityRide program. Rides include pickup and return from private residences, and to medical appointments, businesses and other locations in Shawnee.
The program includes the 10/10 Taxi available for residents going to the AdventHealth Shawnee Mission Hospital Complex, the Mission Transit Center, or the Merriam Community Center. The service is available 24/7 and on holidays, and it's advisable to call 45 minutes ahead of time or schedule an hour beforehand if picked up west of Lackman.
