Senior Services of Wichita, a private, nonprofit, nongovernment organization, provides a variety of programs and services that meet the demands of the city’s senior population. Its projects include a roving pantry, Meals on Wheels, recreation programs offered at dedicated senior centers and in-home support services, as well as access to information about senior-related issues.

The Senior Companion Program is a project of the Mental Health Association of South Central Kansas, funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service, United Way of the Plains and Sedgwick County. It provides free in-home companionship and respite care to seniors aged 55 and older. The program also accepts volunteer companions from the same age group, who earn tax-free stipends and allowances for their services.

Funded by the United States Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Service, the Kansas Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program provides an annual benefit for seniors to purchase fresh, locally grown produce from certified farmers at designated markets within the state. The program distributes benefit checks to seniors aged 60 and older who have an income below 186% of the federal poverty level. Funding is limited and benefits are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

The in-home care program is geared towards homebound seniors who need help with daily chores, such as cooking and cleaning. Stepping On is a fall prevention program initiated by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. It helps build confidence and reduce fall risks in cognitively intact seniors aged 60 and older who can move independently on their own or with the use of mobility aids and who have had a fall within the last year or have a fear of falling. Interactive workshops include moving about safely, bone health, home hazards, medication and good sleeping habits.
