With nearly 85,000 residents, the small city of Danbury is also home to approximately 12,000 seniors aged 65 and older. As rates of Alzheimer’s and other related types of dementia continue to rise nationwide, Danbury has seen its own share of added cases, with the numbers of Alzheimer’s-related deaths increasing 7.17% between 2014 and 2018, from 279 to 299 per year, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Given that the overall death rate during the same time period increased by only 1.65%, it’s clear that Alzheimer’s plays an increasingly significant role in the overall death rate of recent years.

The SeniorScore for Danbury, CT
With a SeniorScore of 67, Danbury scores eight points lower than the Connecticut average of 75 and five points lower than the national average of 72. Utilizing more than 100 data points from private and governmental databases, SeniorScore provides a liveability index to help older adults determine a location’s senior-friendliness. Of the four categories, Danbury scores highest for Health & Safety, with a 70, followed by Recreation & Leisure, with a 61.
A safe community, Danbury’s seniors also enjoy a greater-than-average life expectancy, part of the reason for the city’s highest score in the Health & Safety category. The very high number of Medicare-registered physicians and nearly 200 pharmacies also play a role. And although there is only one local hospital, Danbury is also one hour from Yale New Haven Hospital, ranked first in the state and 20th in the country for geriatrics care, according to U.S. News and World Report. In the category of Recreation & Leisure, smaller numbers of seniors drove the score lower, but the many recreational options — including Tarrywile Park and Mansion and the large Danbury Fair Mall — give seniors plenty of activities to choose from. There are also 130 golf courses, 11 movie theaters and 74 gyms or health clubs close by.
Danbury scores a lower 55 in Finances, and this is due to a combination of factors: property taxes are high, and so are care costs, significantly higher than national averages. Although the cost of living overall is high, workers do earn significantly more than elsewhere. City sales taxes are also lower. The very high amount of rainfall annually, poor air quality and average school safety ratings contribute to a lower score in the General Quality of Life category. However, it is worth noting that public schools do have very high quality rankings, and the water quality is above average.
Memory Care Costs in Danbury, CT
At a 25% increase over assisted living care costs, memory care is the second-most expensive form of care, other than nursing, which maintains the highest costs. To figure memory care costs, we’ve taken the assisted living costs for each city listed below, according to Genworth's Cost of Care Survey 2019, and added 25%.
At $7,938 each month, memory care in Danbury is approximately $1,800 more than the statewide average ($6,100) and much higher, $2,874 more, than the U.S. average ($5,064).
Danbury’s memory care costs are the most expensive in the state, likely due in part to the city’s proximity to New York ($8,688), whose costs most closely resemble Danbury’s (though they still reflect an increase of $750). Further west, prices drop significantly in the larger coastal city of New Haven, where, at an average monthly cost of $4,688, costs are roughly $3,250 less than in Danbury. In Connecticut’s western region, costs in the smaller city of Norwich ($5,309) are higher than in New Haven but still significantly lower than in Danbury, approximately $2,600 less each month. In the capital of Hartford ($5,813), costs are close to average and are also $2,000 less than in Danbury. At $6,688 each month, memory care in Springfield, Massachusetts, while more expensive than most cities in Connecticut, is also still approximately $1,250 less each month than in Danbury.
