The SeniorScore for Sarasota, FL
Sarasota’s SeniorScore is 81, 5 points higher than Florida’s overall score of 76 and significantly higher than the national average of 72. Of the four senior-relevant categories, Sarasota scored most highly for Recreation & Leisure and General Quality of Life, with an 81 and 75 respectively.
As the number one retirement location in the United States, Sarasota has a high percentage of seniors living within its vicinity. As such, the city caters to seniors’ needs and interests, providing more than 80 highly rated golf courses and numerous picturesque beaches. Seniors can peruse the eclectic museums and local galleries as well as enjoy lots of live music and entertainment.
Sarasota also scores highly in the General Quality of Life category, thanks to the ideal year-round temperatures. A safe public school system, high graduation rate and average school ranking also contribute to this higher score. Although there is a low public transportation ridership, seniors can take advantage of the SCAT Gold Cards which provide discounted fare for express and fixed bus service routes throughout the city.
A lower score of 69 in the Health & Safety category is partially due to high crime rates. In other respects, Sarasota has many desirable features, including its proximity to quality care such as Sarasota Memorial Hospital, ranked 7th best out of all Florida hospitals. There are also more than 100 senior living communities nearby, and residents here enjoy a greater-than-average life expectancy.
Higher property taxes in concert with a higher cost of living drives down Sarasota’s Finances score to a 62. However, workers here earn more than national averages, the state tax is 0% and Florida has long been known for its tax-friendly status, which lets seniors keep their Social Security and all other forms of retirement income tax-free.
