Astoria Nursing and Rehabilitation Center

My husband was admitted for rehabilitation. He needed some physical and occupational therapy to once again become independent after surgery. He was a known fall risk patient and had intermittent mild confusion. This facility has no safety measures for a known fall risk patient who needs to get out of bed with physical therapy. I had to stay 24/7 until my husband was aware of where he was and that he wasn't supposed to get out of bed by himself. I only had to stay one night. He was alert and getting up with physical therapy for a couple of days. After that he became severely disoriented. I kept bringing that fact to the physician and nurses. None of them were overly concerned. Finally 3 days later I talked to the nurse who was in his room that something was not right. She said that she would call the doctor but did not seem overly concerned. I then talked with the director of nursing who checked my husband and found he had a high temperature, low oxygen saturation, and rapid breathing. She had someone call 911 and my husband was transported to the closest hospital and was given a diagnosis of pneumonia. If I had not insisted that something was wrong my husband could have died.
