Although independent living has a lot of positive things--unless you are planning to stay there the rest of your life--take a good look at the skilled nursing and what it doesn't offer. If someone needs rehab after the hospital, they are sent to the nursing section if they need an IV daily for a month. Some arrangement should be made instead.Either a room in the independent building or the nurse to check on it since there is a nurse on duty downstairs so it doesn't require going to skilled.The doctor's brief visits are only twice a month. No one told us-when after a month a relative was getting released, the doctor only visits half the patients each time. We waited several hours for the doctor (who has a variable schedule) to find out the doctor would not be coming by. Then, his wife and I were going back to independent. They told us someone would bring the relative up. After an hour, his wife called and they said the person would be bringing him. She was busy doing something. They left our relative at the door to his room which was right outside the nurse's station. Finally, after another half hour, I went down. About that time, the person who was supposed to bring him up in a wheel chair, showed up. "Oh, there was a miscommunication.We were told you left." HE didn't! Someone should have followed up since it is a busy area outside the room and they knew he was being discharged.The location of the room was not good. Patients would wonder into the room unless the door was closed.The staff was nice to the patients, the PT, OT, and Speech were good, but, often (maybe a shortage of nurses), whoever we asked for was at lunch. Eventually, they came. (Sometimes, they were prompt.)There was a always a posse of people. Once or twice three people would show up while at independent to decide if our relative needed to go to a hospital or to skilled. It makes me question if they know what they are doing. One day, at skilled, three met me in a conference room (no intro, but pretty sure one a nurse, one an assistant head nurse, and the director of the skilled.) One repeated a sad situation, saying not much time. I was finally getting annoyed and told her she already said that three times! They were insensitive. No doctor to say it, of course. I would not recommend the skilled nursing.My recommendation is to have home health or Home Instead lined up and stay in the independent apartment. We were looking into it, but with some agencies the aide doesn't give medicine, etc. With falls, someone needs to be there 24 hours which would have been ideal.One good thing, the PT, OT, and Speech do come to the independent apartment.
