Bayside Rehabilitation and Health Center

HORRIBLE PLACE. Bayside Rehab was neglectful of my father's health, to the extent that he fell 5 times while in their care, requiring hospital visits for 3 of those falls. His frail forearm skin was torn, requiring stitches, his leg was severely cut on a sharp bed edge, and his 3rd fall, he required stitches in the back of his head. Bayside's response "we'll put cushions down on the floor." Additionally he developed stage 4 bedsore in his perineal/coccyx area due to poor assistance with cleaning by indifferent and poorly trained CNA's to the point where it was excruciating for him use the toilet because the skin would break open. He would cry from the pain. They never followed thru with the special medical air mattress that was supposed to help his wound heal. And except for his PT sessions, he and all the other patients having mobility issues, were left in their beds all day/all night, sitting in their waste if no one came to assist with pottying. He'd push his call button and no one would show up for 20-30-40 or more minutes. We'd visit and see the same patients lined up in their wheelchairs, stuck for hours in the hallways. I will say - the PT staff was very good and helpful and were the only staff there that seemed to care about the old folks in their care. My dad became severely malnourished and dehydrated while at Bayside due to NO ONE assisting him with eating, losing 36 pounds over the course of 6 weeks. They would drop the food trays off, then pick them up, not caring whether he had eaten or drank any liquids. He'd regain strength when hospitalized a day or two for dehydration, high potassium levels, those falls, the bedsores, etc, then return to Bayside and his health would tank again after a week or so. UNCARING nurses, UNCARING CNA's but boy or boy, their administrative staff sure put on a show during several meetings with them about my father's care. Lastly....physician oversight of care is lacking here. My father came in to Bayside weakened but recovering from pneumonia...and he was treated for the WRONG TYPE of pneumonia bacteria which was caught at the new rehab we got him admitted to. DO NOT go by just online results about their state care surveys, RESEARCH where you place your loved one, especially if you are having to make a decision while under stress (or as an adult child living in another state.) Look for reviews from actual patients/relatives, not phony reviews placed by staff. Do better than I did.
