Masonicare

If I could do zero stars I would. My husband went to Masonicare for rehab after a hospital stay for pneumonia and lung blood clot. No visitors were allowed due to COVID, which is somewhat understandable, so you have to rely on phone calls from the staff. My husband was new to blood thinner medication so I questioned his nurse about it over the phone and her response to me was “I don’t see it on my list. I will need to check and get back to you”. Needless to say, she never got back to me and after numerous unanswered phone calls to the unit, I finally got my answer three days later. I left many messages for update that went unanswered. I demanded he be released to home care. When I went to pick him up, the aide handed me his suitcase, which was empty. No clothes - missing four pants and five shirts. They have lost his clothes - “must be in the laundry” even though two different people went down to the laundry and couldn’t find any of his clothes. No explanation for the clothes missing - just excuses and hang-ups. Called back five hours after his release and they still can’t find them. They sent him home in scrub pants and one of his flannels. After much frustration I was hung up on after I expressed my anger. I sent the majority of his clothes there so he would have enough and he was sent home with none, with very little home here. Very very miserable experience at Masonicare in Wallingford.

My neighbor was sent to Masonicare for rehabilitation which I thought was a excellent choice..boy was I wrong. The food was deplorable, she barely ate anything because it was usually cold and very unappetizing, they even sent burnt toast to her. The nursing help is very understaffed or so they say that is why they don’t respond in a timely manner. Part of the unit was under quarantine while she was there so she was unable to be taken through that area to receive physical therapy, which was why she was there. They did come to her room to do some therapy with her but obviously they couldn’t give her the same therapy as she had been receiving before the quarantine. Which slowed her recovery, but they insisted that she was done after the 4 weeks anyways. And they neglected to take her over the weekend for who knows why! Probably another staffing issue! She did enjoy her therapist Frank as he went out of his way to get her help for breathing issues that arose from the room being so hot and dry. Not one of the nursing staff felt the need to address her issues even when she couldn’t get food down because she had so much congestion backing into her throat. I hope all this neglect doesn’t come back to haunt her at home. But then if she has to return to an ER after being discharged it won’t look like it was Masonicare’s neglect that brought it on! I can’t recommend this place and I think they ought to be investigated for many issues of neglect! Very poor care for our elderly who hate to complain while in their care.

We were looking for a short term possibly long term facility for my DAd. Donna in admissions was rude and uncaring. All she was concerned with was if he owned a home. He has the means to pay privately. Luckily, we found a long term facility that cares about the patient and the family.

With the exception of a two employees: a nursing aide named Tammy and a social worker named Rachel, who are both stellar human beings, Masonicare as a whole is an abominable place! Willful neglect of patients is the way they do business here. My father was at Masonicare for rehabilitation for muscle weakness. In the two weeks he was at Masonicare, my father was allowed to fall onto the floor FIVE times! He fell when the toileting aide was too busy watching the television, and he fell while in the immediate supervision of the physical therapist! My dad went to Masonicare with very well controlled CHF ( congestive heart failure) through a strict low-sodium diet. Masonicare willfully neglected his dietary requirements and fed him sodium saturated foods like BLT sandwiches and Sloppy Joes. Even your average diner waitress could tell you these foods are killers to CHF patients. Sure enough, Masonicare managed to take my dad's well-controlled heart condition and within two weeks, my father had to be rushed to Hartford Hospital in full-on CHF crisis. Dad was literally drowning in the fluid collected in his body. And now, his kidneys were at the brink of failing, too. The ER doctor at Hartford Hospital told us dad's CHF blood markers were the highest they've ever been in my dad's life, this after Masonicare neglected his dietary requirements. While Dad was in the ER, he told the doctors about his five falls onto the hard floors at Masonicare. A lumbar CAT scan was ordered and sure enough, Dad now has an L3 spinal fracture! Unbelievable!!!! I will forever tell anyone who will listen, if you want your loved one to die a fast, needless, and undignified death, send then to Masonicare! Luckily we got my father out of that horrid place fast! On 3 different occasions over a span of 4 weeks, my mom was left for HOURS in dirty diapers. I asked for help to change her and was told, we are short staffed and will get to her when we can. While workers stood chatting about weekend plans and on their cell phones. I watched a woman pleading for someone to take her to the bathroom for 20 minutes and she was told to go in her diaper. How dare these PAID EMPLOYEES, strip these seniors of what little dignity they try to have. I am so tired of hearing "we are short staffed". Absolutely no excuse for neglecting those who have no other choice than to be there. This is abuse!
