The Sequoias

My parents bought into the Sequoias years ago, in order to be guaranteed an apartment when they were ready to move into assisted living. After a long remodel by the contractor, they finally moved in 10 months ago. Everything went fine until my father experienced a life-changing injury and became non-ambulatory. Although a couple of staff members expressed their concerns, nobody at the Sequoias took the initiative to meet with our family to discuss an effect on their living situation in the apartment, or my father's health. After I made it clear there had been no outreach after three weeks, the head nurse from the health center visited and discussed the availability of OT and PT. After securing a hospital bed, Hoyer lift and shower chair for my father, and getting them delivered to the apartment, my father returned just days before Christmas. He had been there a few hours when the Director of the facility visited unannounced. He conducted an inspection of their apartment, and declared it unsafe for my father due to a lack of clearance around his bed and the furniture in the bedroom. I researched the code for assisted living facilities, and can find no such restrictions. As a lawyer who had elder law courses in law school, I'm well situated to do so. The Director ordered my father to the medical center, where he now stays 24 hours a day, except for one four hour pass a day. We have no idea what the Sequoias will allow in the future, as it is now Christmas break, and there is nobody to talk to about the situation. This is not the homecoming we have worked so hard for over the last month. As a family, we are devastated at the cruelty of this sudden decision, and the gross negligence of the Sequoias in their failure to engage with and work with our family to ensure my parent's well being. Are the grounds nice? Yes. Are the apartments nice? Yes, although small. Is the food good? It's passable to good. Is it worth what they charge to be with other well-healed patrons? I guess that's the issue for most. To me, the callous indifference to my father's injury, rehabilitation and mental/emotional well being is a fatal flaw.
