Huntsville is located in northern Alabama only 15 miles south of the Tennessee border. With around 32,392 residents over the age of 65, seniors represent 16.1% of Huntsville's population of 200,574, which makes it the state's third-largest city.
Supported by strong metrics in the Finances category, Huntsville has a SeniorScore of 78, which is six points above the state and national numbers. On average, its residents pay less than a third of what most Americans pay for income-based property taxes and less than half the national average for value-based property taxes. Across all senior living options, including in-home care, seniors in Huntsville pay less than the national average, and the city's overall cost of living is also below the nationwide mean, which helps establish Huntsville as an attractive locale for retirees on a budget. Unfortunately, Huntsville's relatively high crime rate and below-average life expectancy make Health & Safety its poorest-performing category with a SeniorScore of 64.
For Recreation & Leisure, the city's second-highest scoring category, Huntsville's SeniorScore is 69. Between dozens of golf clubs, parks, gyms and movie theaters, older adults in Huntsville have a myriad of opportunities to stay active and pursue rewarding hobbies. When seniors are craving cultural enrichment, the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, the Huntsville Botanical Gardens and the U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum are only moments away.
This guide was created to help seniors make informed decisions about in-home care. It includes a brief overview of the Medicaid waiver for home care as well as government-funded programs that help seniors subsidize their food and prescription medication costs.
The Cost of Home Care in Huntsville, AL
According to the Genworth 2020 Cost of Care Survey, home care in Huntsville costs $3,813 per month on average. Although it's relatively expensive compared to the state's $3,342 median cost of home care, it's quite affordable considering that most American seniors pay around $4,481 per month.
Across Huntsville and Alabama as a whole, most seniors are paying the same for home care as they would for home health care despite the latter offering additional medical services, such as medication administration and blood sugar monitoring. However, as the national numbers imply, the majority of seniors throughout the country are spending a bit more to access the additional medical support that comes with home health care. The price difference between the two care types varies. Both Huntsville and Mobile have average home health care costs of $3,813 a month, but Mobile's monthly cost of home care is $381 less than what seniors in Huntsville are paying for the same services.
