Lawrence is a midsize city that straddles the Merrimack River near the border with New Hampshire in northern Massachusetts. The city is home to just over 8,000 seniors aged 65 and over — roughly 10% of the population — and its residents are significantly younger than those in the state and the U.S. overall.
The economics of Lawrence are largely responsible for its very low SeniorScore of 60. This overall rating is based on over 100 factors of senior-friendliness. The Finances category of SeniorScore is dragged down by factors such as the high cost of home care, assisted living and nursing facilities, as well as the low average income per household and per capita. Lawrence compares more favorably in its Health & Safety factors, with much better than average access to Medicare-registered physicians, more hospitals than the norm for a city of its size and a large variety of senior communities and home healthcare providers. Residents of Lawrence have an average life expectancy approximately 2 years higher than the United States, which helps raise the SeniorScore.
Lawrence is an industrial center in the Merrimack Valley, producing large amounts of electronic equipment and clothing, and it's home to a wide variety of immigrant communities. The city has a lower overall cost of living compared to Massachusetts by 20%, although it's still approximately 7% higher than that of the United States. Healthcare costs are significantly lower in Lawrence — presenting savings of roughly 17% compared to the national average — with an air quality rating in line with the United States, although its water quality is significantly lower.
This guide helps seniors and families budget for their future home care costs and provides a list of city-specific resources that may be useful for residents of Lawrence.

Seniors in Lawrence pay a similar amount for home care compared to Massachusetts overall — $5,720 in the city and $5,529 in the state — and the difference is under $100 per month in the case of home health care. Home health care differs only in that basic medical care can be provided to recipients.
Lawrence is one of the most expensive areas in the state for both types of senior home care, although the difference is negligible in many cases. Worcester's costs are $100-$200 cheaper, depending on the type of care provided, and in Pittsfield, the difference is just under $400 per month. Just across the border to the north in Manchester, New Hampshire, the cost is slightly lower for home care, while home health care costs are the same as in Lawrence.
