As the seventh-largest city in North Carolina, Cary is home to 170,000 residents, nearly 12% of whom are seniors ages 65 and older. As Alzheimer’s affects more seniors nationwide each year, nowhere is that more apparent than Cary, where, according to the Centers for Disease Control, the city has seen a whopping 91.12% increase in Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related deaths between 2014 and 2018, rising from 169 per year to 323. Considering that the rate of overall deaths has only increased by 18.18% during that same time period, it is clear that Alzheimer’s is a real concern for Cary seniors and their families.
To address these rising numbers, a number of memory care communities are available in the Cary area that provide medical care, including targeted therapies and programs, that can help slow the rate of mental decline. All this is delivered in a secure environment with around-the-clock supervision, giving families greater peace of mind that their loved ones are safe. This guide provides more information about memory care, including how costs in Cary compare with neighboring cities, resources for those affected by memory loss and their loved ones as well as a listing of local memory care communities.
The SeniorScore for Cary, NC
With a SeniorScore of 81, Cary scores significantly higher, 9 points higher, than both the state and national average of 72. Of the four senior-relevant categories, Cary scores highest for Health & Safety with a 75, followed closely by a Finances score of 73.
Minutes from both Raleigh, Chapel Hill and Durham means seniors living in Cary have some of the most highly rated hospitals at their fingertips. Duke Health System in nearby Durham can connect seniors experiencing Alzheimer’s with more than 20 specialists, from neurologists to geriatric psychiatrists, and Duke University’s Department of Neurology has a memory disorders clinic, designed to help address the needs of memory problems from a number of perspectives. A high score of 73 in Finances was due to an overall lower cost of care (a combination of low property taxes and nursing care costs), in conjunction with higher-than-average incomes. Social Security earnings are not taxed. And although the city has poor air and water quality, its very high public school graduation and safety rates boosted its General Quality of Life to a 71, as did its mild, comfortable winters.
Only in Recreation & Leisure did Cary score slightly lower, 67, and this was partially caused by the modest numbers of seniors in the area. However, Cary is still within 30 minutes of much larger locales, and this can be one way for seniors to more readily connect and socialize with others. There are also 52 golf courses and 31 parks, including the Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve and the Fred G. Bond Metro Park, with its paddle boats, fishing and rocking chairs for relaxing at the boathouse.
