Indianapolis is home to 876,384 residents, and seniors aged 65 and older make up 12.2% of the city's population. Unfortunately, memory loss is a growing problem among seniors in Indianapolis. Not only does Alzheimer's disease cause a host of progressive health issues, but in Indianapolis, death rates due to Alzheimer's have risen. In 2014, there were 273 Alzheimer's deaths, and that number rose by 12.8% by 2018, when 308 residents died from the disease. During that same four-year period, the overall death rate citywide rose by 2.68%.
Since Alzheimer's and many other forms of dementia are progressive-degenerative diseases, many people living with memory loss require around-the-clock supervision and support. In Indianapolis, there are a number of specialized residential programs that cater to adults with dementia. These programs provide dementia patients with 24/7 nonmedical care that includes room and board, assistance with activities of daily living, and structured recreational activities designed to slow the progression of their disease.

Out of the SeniorScore's four categories, Indianapolis scored the highest with 69 for Recreation & Leisure, while the city's lowest category score, a 56, was for General Quality of Life.

Memory care services in Indianapolis are provided either in a residential memory care facility, or within a dedicated memory care unit that's part of an assisted living or continuing care community. In order to keep residents safe, there's a high staff-to-resident ratio, specialized security systems and daily structured recreational activities provided in residential memory care programs. These enhanced services are why memory care rates run about 20% to 30% more than assisted living rates in the area. Given the lack of a national database that tracks memory care costs, we've estimated memory care rates in Indianapolis by adding 25% to the assisted living rates documented in Genworth Financial's 2020 Cost of Care Survey.
Residential memory care rates in Indianapolis average $5,716 per month, which is above the state ($5,478) and national ($5,375) averages. Actual rates are set by each facility, and may be higher or lower than the average.
Memory care costs vary throughout Indiana. At $5,716 per month, rates in Indianapolis are relatively high, although rates are even higher in Lafayette ($5,988) and South Bend, which at $6,024 per month is the most expensive place in the state to seek residential memory care services. Prices are similar to those in Indianapolis in Muncie ($5,806) and slightly less in Evansville ($5,569). Costs in Fort Wayne and Terre Haute are considerably lower at $4,379 and $4,563, respectively. Bloomington, located just to the south of Indianapolis, has the lowest average rate in the state at $3,550 per month.

Indiana Alzheimer's Disease Research Center Established in 1991, the Indiana Alzheimer's Disease Research Center is one of 32 centers nationwide dedicated to Alzheimer's research. The Center operates a number of clinical trials and research initiatives, and regularly recruits study participants who either have a family history of memory loss, or who are experiencing signs of Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia.
