Seniors living in Memphis have access to two of the state's best hospitals, according to U.S News and World Report, including Baptist Memorial Hospital, which is tied for third-best in the state, and Methodist Hospitals of Memphis — it's tied for seventh-best. Interstate 40 runs through Memphis, offering easy access to the second-largest city in West Tennessee, Jackson, and the capital cities of Arkansas and Tennessee — Little Rock and Nashville, respectively, which are two and three hours away.
Many seniors go on to need living assistance. While moderate assistance can be provided by retirement communities or assisted living facilities, some seniors will inevitably need intensive, around-the-clock care. Those who need more living assistance than what assisted living facilities provide but less than what full-time hospital stays offer are well-suited for nursing homes.
In this guide, we review Memphis' SeniorScore, talk about the average cost of nursing homes here and go over a few helpful senior-oriented resources offered by nonprofits and government agencies.
The SeniorScore for Memphis, Tennessee
Memphis has a SeniorScore of 70 points, slightly lower than the national and state average of 72 points. The SeniorScore rates the senior-friendliness of cities and states on a scale of 0 to 100. Scores are split into four categories, the highest of which for Memphis is General Quality of Life with a score of 66 points. This category is followed closely by Recreation & Leisure at 64 points, Health & Safety at 62 points then finally Finances at 58 points.
Seniors should be prepared for Memphis' humid summers; on the bright side, the area has mild winters, making for ideal year-round averages. A high population density and below-average air quality are largely to blame for the city's similarly below-average General Quality of Life score. Although Memphis only has a score of 64 points in Recreation & Leisure, the Home of the Blues has plenty of age-appropriate recreational options for seniors, including the National Civil Rights Museum, Theater Memphis, Elvis Presley's Graceland and Beale Street. On the downside, Memphis' low proportion of seniors to its overall population may make finding friends difficult for seniors who move there.
Next up, in third place, is Health & Safety. The city has 16 hospitals, 100 senior living facilities, 584 pharmacies and many doctors who accept Medicare. Unfortunately, Memphis is renowned for its very high property and violent crime rates. Still, seniors can find nursing homes nestled in safe neighborhoods to stay out of harm's way. Despite Tennessee's lack of state income tax, Memphis' worst category is Finances. Although it has high city sales taxes, Memphis has a low cost of living.
