Park Avenue Extended Care Facility

On Friday March 19, 2021 my father was discharged from Winthrop hospital. We were very particular regarding our selection of his rehabilitation center and asked that he not be in a facility to accepts covid patients. At 2:00 PM he left the hospital in an ambulette and was taken to Park Avenue. A family member followed him from the hospital. When he arrived and tried to enter the facility, he was told that he could not enter he facility due to covid. Simultaneously, a worker from the facility came to the front desk, got on the intercom and started yelling, "everyone working in this facility needs to wear the masks provided at this facility, You need to stop wearing masks you bring from home!" There was another person at the door who was also dropping off things for a family member who told the family member there for my father that he received a call earlier in the day that there were 4 positive covid cases reported on that day. We were not notified of this prior to sending him. Had we known this we would have chosen another facility. He also told us that my father would not receive his hearing aides or clothes until Monday. I tried calling the facility multiple times and received no call back. I just kept getting transferred. My mother, who was in the hospital, finally got in touch with a nursing supervisor who said my father was in isolation. I called my father who told me he was in a room with another person which was verified. When we inquired if covid patients were on different floors or treated by different staff we were told "we don't have to tell you that" On Saturday my mother told them we wanted to come pick up my father because they had not told us that there was covid in the facility, he is fragile and can not catch covid. They also would not answer any questions we had about how they prevent spread in their facility. They asked my mother who told her there was covid, what did the person look like and that they did not have to tell us there was covid in the facility. They so threatened her to call elder abuse on her if she signed him out AMA. My brother went to pick him up Saturday morning and although we brought clothes for him they told us they were unable to find them and released him my brother in a hospital gown, socks and a soaking wet diaper. Today we received a call from elder protective services. Are they kidding?! They are the abusive ones! And they lied about covid in their facility. We had to rush on Saturday to get 24 hour care, paid over $2000 for the weekend only and they call elder protective services. I filed a complaint with the state today. This facility needs to be investigated.

I recently moved my mother from Beach Terrace over to Park Avenue and it's like a breath of fresh air. Everyone from the admin to the aides have been nothing but kind and caring. My mom has advanced dementia but I have only witnessed patience and warmth when it comes to handling her. Plus the staff is so welcoming when I come to visit. At Beach Terrace, the aides were more interested in talking to each other than the residents and I was treated as like a stranger even after 3 years. I could not be happier since I made the decision to move my mom.
