Ware Presbyterian Village

Oxford Health Center for over a decade was a wonderful lively place for residents and their families. However, the past 5 years or so, I have witnessed a decline. There was a major renovation that took almost 2 years so it looks pretty but make sure it is functional for your loved one. For example, getting about on the carpet in a manual wheelchair, bathroom size for walkers etc.. So much turnover of the executives onsite in addition to the ongoing problem of staffing numbers for CNAs. The executives all came in saying they were there for the longterm to make it resident's home and within 2 years or less they would be gone. I am forever grateful for the joyous times this facility gave my mom and for the nurses and especially the aides. She led an active life there despite being non-ambulatory. She was close so could visit frequently during the week etc... When Covid forced quarantine, I believed it was best course for a month or 2 at most and I completely trusted those operating the facility. Little did I know ,despite having connections there, all the underlying chaos in administration. They were totally ill equipped to handle such an event in that they were all too new to the facility and residents etc,.. let alone unimaginable event. But I continued to trust those I spoke with, emailed with and yes argued with. My mom required 24/7 care and Alzheimers so not an easy decision to uproot her from her home of 14 years. I am responsible for my choices and in trusting those in charge as weeks added up. As others, my mom was protected to death as she contracted Covid on 12/10/20 most likely due to thanksgiving holiday that only staff were able to enjoy with their families. The health center had the worst one day surge in cases that day. Several families including myself (daughter and POA) were not notified immediately as promised . I was unable to implement my plan of bringing her home. My mom died on 12/13 and thank God I was able to be with her. Despite it being her home for 14 years not one person from the facility sent condolences to me and others I know. It sickens me that she just missed the vaccine and lifting of restrictions. You must be an advocate for medical care and may often need to demand xrays etc. Once asked, they do move quickly in getting requests done but you must initiate often.
