With an overall SeniorScore of 79, Austin scored higher than both the state average of 74 and the national average of 72. Calculated using more than 100 data points, the SeniorScore indicates a city's degree of senior-friendliness across four categories: Recreation & Leisure, Health & Safety, Finances and General Quality of Life. Austin received its highest score of 84 in the General Quality of Life category due to low levels of rainfall, warm winters and very good water quality. When it comes to Health & Safety, the city earned a score of 71 due to the very high number of Medicare-registered physicians and home health care providers. The modest senior population contributed to a lower score in the Recreation & Leisure category, and the higher property and city sales taxes reduced Austin’s Finances score. However, seniors living in Austin generally show higher mean, median and per capita incomes than elsewhere in the country. According to Genworth Financial's 2019 Cost of Care Survey, home care in Austin costs $4,576 per month, which is more than the statewide average of $3,956 and the national average of $4,290. Across the state, other cities have lower costs for home care. Dallas, a larger metropolis, comes closest, at $4,195 per month, and costs in San Antonio ($4,185) are similar to Dallas’. Houston ($4,099) is comparably priced, while prices drop to $3,432 per month in Corpus Christi. El Paso, at the westernmost part of the state, is the least expensive, at $2,837 monthly.
In Austin, home care costs the same as home health care. However, home health care often costs more because it includes limited medical care. In many other Texas cities, such as Dallas, San Antonio, El Paso and Corpus Christi, the cost for both forms of care is the same. Only in Houston is home health care slightly higher than home care, at $25 more each month.

Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area
A division of the Capital Area Council of Governments, the Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area (AAACAP) provides information and referrals by phone and helps recently hospitalized seniors obtain care coordination. Travis County Veterans Services
Veteran seniors and their dependents can receive individualized and general information and assistance applying for all qualifying benefits and services through Travis County Veterans Services (TCVS). In addition to details and counseling regarding pensions, home loans and disability compensation, TCVS provides information specific to women veterans, available work-study programs and more.

Austin VA Clinic
A branch of the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System, the Austin VA Clinic provides a full spectrum of health care for local senior veterans and their dependents. In addition to primary care, the Austin VA Clinic offers dental care, audiology, podiatry, radiology and more. The Austin VA Clinic also runs a Transition Care Management Program to help seniors move from a hospital or rehab setting back into their homes and community.

Austin Parks & Recreation
Austin’s Parks & Recreation Department is responsible for the oversight and implementation of a variety of senior services and programs for seniors aged 50 and older. Hobbies, classes and lectures are offered, as are opportunities for travel and volunteering. Seniors can take part in the Old Bakery and Emporium, a consignment store featuring offerings made by local artisans and enjoy free lunches at the Asian American Resource Center. Curb-to-curb transportation services are also available, as are congregant meals hosted at one of Austin's several senior centers.

Meals on Wheels Central Texas
Meals on Wheels of Central Texas (MWCT) is committed to enriching the lives of homebound seniors by providing nutritious, nourishing meals on weekdays, with optional meals available on weekends. MWCT also offers Breakfast Meals, as well as Groceries to Go, a grocery shopping and delivery service. Other services include assistance with in-home care, minor and major home repairs, pet food and health care.
